Spinal boards, also known as backboards, are rigid, long, and flat medical devices used to immobilize individuals suspected of having spinal injuries. Typically made of plastic or composite materials, spinal boards provide stability and support, preventing further damage to the spine during transport. They are commonly used in emergency situations such as car accidents or falls where spinal injuries are suspected. Spinal boards have straps to secure the patient in place and often feature openings to accommodate the head and neck. While effective for stabilization, prolonged use can lead to discomfort and pressure sores. Therefore, they are primarily utilized for short-term immobilization until a thorough assessment and appropriate treatment can be provided by medical professionals.
